What did our critic think of UNTIL THE FLOOD at Stray Cat Theatre? Attending a one-person play presents a unique theatrical experience, offering an intimate and immersive journey into the depths of a single performer's storytelling prowess. Yet, within this singular spotlight lies the allure and hazard of the format.
INTIMATE APPAREL: It is the great achievement of Arizona Theatre Company that Lynn Nottage's meditation on one woman's loneliness and desire is fully realized. Directed by Oz Scott, with a stellar ensemble, featuring Tracy N. Bonner's tour de force performance, the production is a must-see. Runs through March 3rd at Tempe Center for the Arts.
Under the astute and inspired direction of Dolores E. Mendoza, GLORIA (Stray Cat Theatre’s 22nd Season opener) the lines and action of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins's play are transformed into a jarring high-voltage theatrical experience. Runs through October 14th at Tempe Center for the Arts.
All of these theaters had programming that was - you know, sort of your tent poles on the mainstage, your occasional blockbuster musical. On the second stage, there was riskier work, new work being developed that might not appeal to a 700-seat audience. I thought that was incredible - you're doing these blockbuster Broadway musicals, the best of the best plays, and then new work that is exciting and thrilling. And that sort of became part of my DNA as I was thinking about directing.

Stray Cat Theatre's (SCT) second show of the season, La Ruta by Isaac Gomez, is an important offering touching on the often-ignored crime of femicide, or the murdering of women simply for being a woman, just across our border in the city of Juárez, Mexico.
